Wiegand helped put Sangamon State soccer on the map with a victory against the top-ranked Division I team in Alabama A&M in 1978. He is considered one of the fastest athletes ever to play at SSU/UIS and was the first SSU All-American, earning the honor in both of his seasons.

As a defender he helped the SSU backline record 10 shutouts in 1978 and seven more in 1979, including a 2-0 victory to advance to the NAIA National Championship game. During the 1979 season, Wiegand was named the NAIA Tournament Most Outstanding Back and the NAIA Area III All-Star team.

He was one of the few American players to play in the North American Soccer League. As a defender for the Ft. Lauderdale Strikers, he played in front of 80,000 fans in the league championship game at Giants Stadium in 1980 against the New York Cosmos.
