The 1986 men's soccer team was the first soccer team at Sangamon State University to ever win the NAIA National Championship. Under Gonulsen's leadership, the team placed second at the World Collegiate Cup after defeating UCLA in the quarterfinals.

The 1986 team finished the season with a 20-8-1 record. Mark Moser was the leading scorer with 26 goals and six assists for 58 points. The Prairie Stars outscored their opponents 79-24 and recorded 15 shutouts, including a span of six games where they did not allow a goal.

In the NAIA district and area playoffs the Prairie Stars defeated current GLVC members McKendree and Wisconsin-Parkside to earn a berth in the NAIA National Championship. SSU dropped a 2-0 decision to Westmont before rattling off three straight shut-out victories including a 1-0 championship win against Simon Fraser.

Three players were honored as NAIA All-Americans including Bill Becher, Marty Pike and Mark Moster. Becher was named the NAIA National Tournament MVP.
