Prairie Stars to Host Saints on Tuesday Afternoon

3/31/2025 2:00:00 PM

Before resuming its GLVC slate at Upper Iowa this weekend, the UIS baseball team will welcome the Maryville Saints to the UIS Baseball Field for a midweek non-conference matchup. Last Tuesday's meeting between the teams was a 13-6 win for UIS, where the Prairie Stars' bats came alive in the late innings while strong pitching secured the victory. Another competitive matchup is expected this time around.

Illinois Springfield (16-10, 10-5 GLVC)
The Prairie Stars are riding a seven-game winning streak that includes part of a series win over UMSL, last week's victory against Maryville, and a four-game sweep of Lincoln. The UIS offense was firing on all cylinders against Lincoln, combining for 51 hits and 56 runs across the series. Ty Hollandsworth led the way with an incredible .833 / .923 / 1.333 slash line, going 5-for-6 with five walks, two extra-base hits, and zero strikeouts. Kody Morton added a 6-for-10 performance with a home run and a double, while Ivan Dahlberg went 7-for-12 with two doubles, a triple, and a home run to drive in four runs. Noah Caceres provided the biggest power surge, blasting two home runs—including a grand slam—while going 7-for-17 with 10 RBIs.

UIS pitchers were equally impressive, holding Lincoln to fifteen runs over four games. Mark Decicco earned another complete game win, allowing one run on four hits over 7.0 innings with a 1.29 ERA and a .167 opponent batting average. Ben Benoit delivered a strong start as well, giving up one earned run on nine hits for a 1.80 ERA. Adam Lindsey kept Lincoln in check in the series finale, pitching 5.2 innings while allowing just three hits, and Kannon Walker earned the win in relief in the series opener.

Maryville (13-14, 6-6 GLVC)
The Saints head into Tuesday's contest after taking three of four games at McKendree, winning 16-15 and 8-7 on Friday, dropping a 5-4 decision on Saturday, and closing the series with a dominant 19-3 victory. Maryville's offense produced well, piling up 47 runs with 10 doubles and 13 home runs. Cole Christman led the way with nine hits, including two home runs, and drove in eight runs across the series. Josh Herget provided three home runs, accounting for all of his hits but matching Christman with eight RBIs.
