Three UIS baseball student-athletes were named to the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District Team. Tommy Atkinson, Corey Boyette, and Jesse Contreras earned the honor, while Atkinson and Boyette advanced to the CSC Academic All-America ballot.
The CSC Academic All-District Team recognizes student-athletes who maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or higher while meeting strict playing-time requirements. To be eligible, student-athletes must participate in at least 90 percent of their team's games or start at least 67 percent of contests. Freshmen are not eligible for the award.
Boyette adds the academic honor to an impressive first season with the Prairie Stars. The outfielder was named First Team All-GLVC and earned All-Region recognition from the NCBWA, D2CCA, and ABCA. He led UIS in batting average and walks, tied for the team lead in doubles and triples, and ranked second in runs scored and hits. Boyette studied liberal arts at UIS.
Atkinson also earned First Team All-GLVC honors in his first season at UIS. The outfielder was selected as a First Team All-Region performer by the NCBWA and earned Second Team All-Region recognition from both the D2CCA and ABCA. Serving as the Prairie Stars' leadoff hitter, Atkinson batted .384 while leading the team with 86 hits and 74 runs scored. He is majoring in finance.
Contreras also earned the first academic honor of his UIS career. The junior infielder transferred to UIS from Heartland and started 47 games between shortstop and first base during his first season with the Prairie Stars. He finished the year with 45 hits and 35 walks, posting a .422 on-base percentage. Contreras is majoring in sports management.
