#5 - Women's Soccer Sets Program Record; Polonus Earns All-GLVC Honors

SPRINGFIELD, IL - The University of Illinois Springfield athletic department had a number of accomplishments during the 2015 year, and as another year comes to a close, we will count down the top-15 moments of the past 365 days as it pertains to the Prairie Star athletic department. The list is comprised of events ranging from individual performances to overall development of the department, while also recognizing team accomplishments on and off the field or court. 

The University of Illinois Springfield women's soccer team defeated Maryville, 1-0, and in doing so, set a program record for wins in a season (5) and Great Lakes Valley Conference wins in a season (4).

Third-year head coach Molly Grisham led the Prairie Stars to the most wins in program history. All five wins came by a score of 1-0, including a victory over William Jewell, a team the Prairie Stars have never defeated. 

Senior goalkeeper Paige Polonus (Plainfield, Ill.) was named to the All-Great Lakes Valley Conference Third Team, as announced by the league office. She is just the third player and first goalkeeper in the program's history to earn All-GLVC honors.

She joins former UIS players Erin Egolf and Casey Thorpe as the only Prairie Stars to ever earn All-GLVC honors. Egolf was a three-time honoree, earning second-team honors twice in her three seasons.

Polonus had the best season of her career in 2015, leading the GLVC with 104 saves and setting career marks in wins (5), minutes played (1695:15), goals allowed (26) and shutouts (7).

She led the Prairie Stars in 2015 to its highest single-season win total and GLVC win total in the program's history. During the team's three-game winning streak back in September, Polonus went 330:06 minutes without allowing a goal, the second-longest span in the program's history.

The Plainfield native is also a three-time All-Academic GLVC honoree.
