UIS Women's Soccer Suffers Narrow Defeat in Season Finale

The UIS women's soccer team (5-9-3, 4-8-2 GLVC) fell to Upper Iowa (4-12-2, 2-11-1 GLVC) on Sunday, 1-0. Despite outshooting the Peacocks 13-7 and putting nine shots on goal, the Prairie Stars were unable to break through.

UIS opened the match aggressively, taking advantage of the wind at Harms-Eischeid Stadium with early chances from Mallory Herber, whose two shots on goal were both saved by Upper Iowa goalkeeper Isabelle Wagner. The Prairie Stars continued to apply pressure with attempts from Ellie Mejia and Kalli Drexler, but could not convert. On the defensive end, Gigi Yurevich made key saves against Upper Iowa's Stephany Castillo to keep the match scoreless at halftime.

Upper Iowa broke through in the 57th minute when Haylie Hutchinson scored off an assist from Giovanna Alexa Garcia. Mejia had a strong chance earlier in the half, but Wagner again made the stop. With the wind direction favoring the home team, later opportunities for UIS went off target or were turned away. Despite multiple late attempts, the Prairie Stars couldn't find the equalizer as Upper Iowa held on for the win.

Yurevich finished with three saves in 90 minutes of play. Herber led UIS with two shots on goal, while Mejia and Lloyd each added two shots, all on target.

"It was a tough loss for us today," said head coach Scott Myers. "I'm grateful for our seniors, who have left a great legacy for our younger players to build on and create their own. I thought we did a great job of keeping possession and putting pressure on Upper Iowa, but we were unfortunate not to find a goal from our hard work. I'm excited for what's to come with this program — we have a young group that's eager to make their alumni proud."

2025 UIS Women's Soccer
The Prairie Stars wrapped up their 2025 season with a 5-9-3 overall record and a 4-8-2 mark in GLVC play. While UIS missed the conference tournament, the team showed steady growth and promise for the future behind a young core.

In goal, transfer Gigi Yurevich provided stability and made a significant impact as the season progressed. Her presence was vital for the Prairie Stars, reinforcing the defensive backbone of the team.

Season highlights included an early home win over Ohio Dominican, a hat trick from Mallory Herber in the team's conference opener, and a 2-0 road weekend against Lincoln and UMSL. The Prairie Stars also battled through a number of close contests, reflecting the team's resilience and competitiveness under second-year head coach Scott Myers.

As the program bids farewell to its senior class, the Prairie Stars look to build on this season's foundation with optimism for 2026 and beyond.
