UIS women's soccer battled through steady pressure and late rain to defeat Lewis 2-1 on Friday night in Romeoville. Goalkeeper
Gigi Yurevich led the way with five saves.
The Prairie Stars struck first in the 17th minute when
Addison Wittenberg buried a solo effort to put UIS on top. Lewis pressed for an equalizer with several shots and corners throughout the half, but Yurevich made key stops to keep the lead intact, including a sharp save around the 60-minute mark. UIS held a 1-0 advantage at the break.
A heavy rain began to fall late in the game, setting the stage for a wild finish. Lewis leveled the match in the 72nd minute with a goal by Talia Kaempf, but UIS quickly answered.
Abby Roy found the back of the net in the 81st minute, converting off a corner to restore the Prairie Stars' lead.
Yurevich turned away multiple late shots to secure the victory as UIS improved to 5-8-3, 4-7-2 in GLVC play.Â
"We earned a good road win tonight," said head coach
Scott Myers. "Credit to Lewis — they have a great squad and made it very competitive all match long. I'm really happy for our seniors to get another win, and excited for our younger players who continue to learn and grow in a tough conference. It was a huge game from Gigi in goal, making fantastic saves all game. Now we regroup and recover to travel for our last GLVC game at Upper Iowa on Sunday."
