The University of Illinois Springfield baseball team will try to build on past success as they open the 2024 season in Greeneville, Tennessee against Tusculum. The schedule was adjusted prior to the start of the series due to the forecast of inclement weather in the East Tennessee region. The series starts with a doubleheader on Friday at 12:00 p.m. Eastern time, followed by single games on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. ET and Sunday at 12:00 p.m. ET. All times are tentative as weather and field conditions could warrant additional adjustments.
UIS
The Prairie Stars begin life under new coaches Trevor Forde, Chris Rodriguez, and Will Oberg looking to replicate the wild success the team has had in the last few seasons with 20 newcomers. UIS went 36-15 with a 25-7 record in GLVC play in the 2023 season. The Prairie Stars earned the 2 seed in the Midwest Regional and hosted. UIS was picked to finish 5th in the GLVC Preseason Coaches' Poll. TJ Yakimisky (1B, Second-Team All-GLVC) is the only returning all-conference honoree from last year's team. UIS enters the season receiving votes in the NCBWA Preseason Poll.Â
Tusculum (1-2)
The Pioneers opened their 2024 season in Florida last weekend with games against Nova Southeastern, Palm Beach Atlantic, and Lynn. Tusculum needed extra innings to earn their first win of the season against PBA on Saturday. The Pioneers went 25-24 in 2023 with an 11-13 record in conference play. Tusculum was picked to finish 8th in the SAC Preseason Coaches' Poll. The Pioneers also had three representatives on the Preseason All-SAC Baseball Team including first team shortstop Ben Scartz, second team pitcher Luke Absher and third team outfielder Zane Keener.Â
