The University of Illinois Springfield baseball team begins its pursuit of a GLVC Championship title this weekend with a four-game series against Southern Indiana.

UIS broke into the national rankings this week at No. 16 after going 4-0 against Hillsdale last weekend. The Prairie Stars averaged 12 runs a game, while only allowing 2.5 runs a game. UIS ranks in the top-five nationally in batting average and slugging percentage.

Zion Pettigrew had a big opening week with seven runs, nine RBI, and a 1.071 slugging percentage.
Bobby Barnard batted .545, one of seven regulars batting .400 or higher.
Chad Saner had a great start on the mound, allowing two hits and no runs in five innings.

Southern Indiana is currently 2-4 on the season. The Screaming Eagles were swept in a three-game series against Trevecca Nazarene last weekend.

Southern Indiana is batting .253 on the season, and averaging over five runs a game. On the mound, its pitchers have a 5.86 ERA, and opponents are batting .266 off of them.

Ethan Hunter is the team leader with a .360 batting average, Bryce Krizan has scored six runs, and Austin Moody and Lucas McNew each have five RBI. Garrett Welch has been the top starter, having a 3.38 ERA and striking out 10 batters in 10 2/3 innings.

Last season, Southern Indiana won a three-game series over UIS, despite the Prairie Stars outscoring Southern Indiana by a 31-26 margin.
