Jaycee Craver made more UIS history on Friday afternoon at LOLJOS in Springfield, Ill. as she became the University of Illinois Springfield softball program's strikeout queen. Craver threw a shutout in the second game of the doubleheader, helping the Prairie Stars split with Lewis.
Â
Craver tied the career strikeout record in the first inning, and then recorded her 360th career strikeout to end the second. She passed former teammate
Ali Haesele who broke the record last season. Craver would add three more strikeouts in her start. She pitched five innings in the 8-0 run-shortened game, and allowed two hits, one walk, and one hit-by-pitch.
Â
The Prairie Stars already led 1-0 when they scored seven times in the third and fourth innings. In the third, four straight batters had RBI hits, including doubles by
Bree Derhake and
Ali Bortmess. In the fourth,
Calla Wickenhauser hit a bases loaded double that were the final runs of the game.
Â
Wickenhauser finished game two with three hits, five RBI, and one run.
Natalie Cokel scored three times, and
Grace Harris had two hits and two runs.
Â
In the opening game, a pair of home runs caused UIS to fall by a 6-5 score. A third-inning grand slam gave Lewis a 4-1 lead. The Prairie Stars retook the lead with a pair of runs in the third and fourth innings. Another homer by the Flyers, this one a two-run shot in the fifth, proved to be the difference in the game.
Â
Wickenhauser had a two-run homer for the Prairie Stars in the second game. Cokel,
Madi Torry, and Bortmess all had two hits and one run.
Â
UIS is now 22-20 on the year and 11-9 in GLVC play. The Prairie Stars end their home portion of the regular season on Saturday with a noon doubleheader against nationally-ranked Indianapolis.
