SPRINGFIELD, IL --- The Prairie Stars (29-17, 17-7) will travel to the University of Indianapolis for their final series of the regular season as they look to gain ground in the GLVC East standings. Illinois Springfield comes into the series in third place in the GLVC east while UIndy sits sixth.
SETTING THE SCENE
UIS is coming off a weekend in which they set the program record for wins in a single-season, picking up their 29
th victory. UIS has won eight of their last ten games and is now in third place in the GLVC east, while UIndy has gone the other direction, dropping their last nine games and now sits in sixth place.
The Prairie Stars are one game back of Bellarmine and two back of the east leader Southern Indiana. Currently, UIndy sits four games back of the final playoff spot, so would need to sweep and get lots of help to be able to sneak into the tournament.
UIS is already locked in to a playoff spot, with seeding being the only thing left up to decide.
PRAIRIE STARS STAY OFFENSIVE
The Prairie Stars remain one of the best hitting teams in the conference as well as the country, even after facing one of the best pitching staffs in the GLVC. UIS still leads the GLVC in average (.331), runs (376), hits (517), extra-base hits (183), RBI (343), slugging (.541), on-base (.409).
These numbers also rank them in the nation in some categories, including 20
th in average, 14
th in home runs (64), 17
th in scoring (8.1 per game), and 6
th in slugging.
Cole Taylor and
Michael Rothmund continue their tear through the GLVC, as they each lead the league in multiple categories.
Taylor leads the GLVC in:
- Average (.414)
- Runs (59)
- Hits (77)
- Doubles (22)
And ranks in the top-ten in:
- Slugging percentage (2nd) (.753)
- On-Base percentage (3rd) (.476)
- RBI (7th) (43)
- Triples (T-3) (4)
- HR (T-5) (11)
Rothmund leads the GLVC in:
- Slugging percentage (.824)
- RBI (63)
- HR (21)
And ranks in the top-ten in:
- Runs (3rd) (51)
- Hits (6th) (64)
- Triples (T-3) (4)
Rothmund also leads the
entire nation in home runs and ranks second in slugging percentage.
FIGHTING FOR SEEDS
The Prairie Stars currently rank third in the GLVC east but still have a chance to win their first GLVC east crown. Southern Indiana is currently riding a five-game winnings streak while Bellarmine has won nine straight, both of which are ahead of UIS. After a split with Saint Joseph's last weekend, UIS needs to win at least one game against UIndy to secure at least the three-seed but needs to win at least three games to have a shot at the GLVC east title.
ON THE HILL
Brayden Jensen continues his tear on the mound during his freshman season, picking up a win over Saint Joseph's and improving his record to 6-0.
Adam Gregory is tied atop the league in wins with an 8-2 record while the entire team ranks sixth with a 5.05 ERA.
As a staff, UIS leads the entire league in strikeouts, totaling 311 on the season, one of just three teams to have over 300 strikeouts on the season. The staff holds opposing hitters to a .259 average, which is second best in the league.
STEALING IS PROHIBITED
The catching duo of
Ben Schanding and
John Sechen have locked down the running game for opponents. On the season, Schanding and Sechen have thrown out 20 of 32 would-be base stealers, second best in the league.
THE LAST TIME…
UIS is 5-10 all-time against the Greyhounds including a 1-3 mark on the road. These two teams split in Springfield last season before meeting up in the GLVC tournament where UIndy prevailed by a score of 7-1.
COMING UP NEXT
Being the final series of the regular season, UIS will prepare for the GLVC Championships which will be held May 11-14 in Ozark, Missouri at U.S. Baseball Park.
