Saints Clip Prairie Stars in Final Minute

SPRINGFIELD, IL --- Destiny Ramsey eclipsed 20-points for the second straight game, but it wasn't enough as Illinois Springfield (8-13, 2-11) fell to Maryville University (11-9, 7-6) by a score of 68-64. The Prairie Stars led 64-62 with 2:15 remaining, but the Saints ended the game on a 6-0 run to win their fifth straight.

Ramsey hit 9-of-15 from the field for 20-points, giving her 63 points in her last three games. Over the last two games, she has hit 21-of-29 from the field and upped her scoring average to a team-high 13.1 points per game.

UIS started hot, grabbing a 10-5 lead in the first five minutes, but a 13-1 run from the Saints gave the visitors a 19-11 advantage. The Saints ended the first quarter with a 21-15 lead.

UIS trailed by as much as 11 in the second quarter but a layup from Ramsey and three from Patterson cut into the lead before Ramsey connected on two free throws to trail by just four. At the half, UIS trailed 34-29.

The Prairie Stars got within two on three separate occasions in the third quarter but couldn't get over the hump to tie the game. That moment came on the first possession of the fourth when a jumper from Ramsey tied the game at 49 all.

UIS grabbed their first lead since the opening quarter on a three from Tehya Fortune, giving the Prairie Stars a 54-53 advantage with 6:51 remaining. After giving up the lead, Fortune connected again from deep, which was followed by two free throws from Syerra Cunningham, giving UIS a 59-55 lead.

The Saints responded and took a 62-61 lead but a three from Shelbi Patterson gave UIS the 64-62 advantage with 2:15 remaining. UIS is now 7-2 on the season when leading at the 2:00 mark, but have lost back-to-back games with that scenario.

Fortune was the second leading scorer for UIS with 13 points, hitting on 4-of-8 from deep and added a team-high five assists. The five assists gives her 12 over the last two games, after her career-high seven against UMSL.

Patterson and Cunningham each scored 12 while Cunningham added 14 rebounds for her 11th double-double of the season.

Reje Pitchford also dished out five assists on the night, coming off the bench, giving her a career-high. UIS only turned the ball over nine times in the loss and grabbed an incredible 16 offensive boards, but could only turn that into 16 second chance points.

The Prairie Stars will look to end a six-game losing streak on Thursday when they travel to Rolla, Missouri to take on Missouri S&T (8-13, 3-10) who have dropped three-straight games. Tip-off is set for 5:30 PM.
