This Week in UIS Athletics - March 9, 2015


SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - All of the University of Illinois Springfield spring teams are in action this week. Baseball hosts Quincy to kick off GLVC play, while softball heads on the road to start conference action. Men's and women's tennis both have multiple matches, while men's golf hosts a tournament in St. Louis. UIS also hosts its final STARS Club Caravan of the year at the Alamo on Thursday.

The tennis teams took a week off and now prepare for a busy week. The women's team kicks off the week with a match against Greenville on Tuesday before both teams host on Thursday. UMSL comes to town for a non-conference contest. The men's team wraps up the week with a match against Illinois Valley. All of the games will be played at Washington Park as a break in the weather is expected for the week.

The men's golf team is back in action after a week off at the UIS Spring Invite in St. Louis, Mo. at the Missouri Bluffs Golf Course. Sophomore Talon Supak (Washington, Ill.) leads the team in stroke average this season at 76.00.

Last weekend the Prairie Stars finished 10th at the UMSL Desert Classic. Their second round score of 298 tied their season best.

UIS went 5-1 last week to improve to 11-4 overall on the season and off to the best start in Division II history. Taylor Bowlby (St. Charles, Ill.) was stellar in the circle with 1.62 ERA with 12 strikeouts and just five earned runs given up in 21.2 innings. Senior Lauren Hollinshead (Sherman, Ill.) was the leader at the dish with a .438 average, seven hits, seven runs scored and five RBI. She also was 8-for-10 on stolen bases and drew four walks.

The Prairie Stars start GLVC competition against No. 5 UMSL on Saturday before taking on Maryville on Sunday. UIS dropped a pair to the Saints last season, but did not meet with UMSL until the postseason.

Brittany Miller (Washington, Ill.) still leads the team with a .343 average on the season with a team-high 12 hits. She boasts eight RBI, eight walks and nine hit-by-pitch for a .558 on-base percentage.

This week, the Prairie Stars host a four-game series with Quincy to open their conference schedule. Both teams reached the GLVC tournament last season. The series may be played in Sauget, Ill. for the second straight weekend and the dates are subject to change. Pitching has dominated the early part of the UIS season. The Prairie Stars boast three starting pitchers with an earned-run-average under 2.00. Through nine games senior Alex Bradley (Peoria, Ill.) leads the team at the plate with a .290 batting average and four runs-batted-in.
