GETTING TO KNOW Daniel Nyman

Golf Player
- Why did you choose UIS

As an international student I applied for different schools, not fully knowing where I wanted to go. After talking to Coach Frank for Men’s Golf at UIS that decision became much clear. I was well received and felt respected as I came here visiting. That made my decision to choose UIS very easy.
- How did you get your start in (Golf)
My dad introduced me to golf when I was 7 years old or so, and since then it’s been a passion of mine.
- Why do you continue to play (Golf)
Because golf, as many other sports, has no limit. You can never reach a max; there is always room for improvement. Also, there is no way I’m going to let golf “win" over me. Personally I haven’t been fully satisfied with my performance in competition lately, but proving for myself that hard work and dedication pays off is very important for me, and therefore I keep playing.
- How do you manage your time
Every week I look at my class schedule and all due dates for assignments and I set up a schedule for what I need to do every day. When it comes to nutrition I meal prep and have all my meals set for every day and when to eat them, and same with workouts throughout the week. Golf is also planned throughout the week and what parts of my game that I need to work on. This is a lot of planning and a rather structured lifestyle, but for me it works and I believe it’s an important aspect in reaching my goals. Time to lay around or just chill is sacrificed of course, but such is the cost if you wanna reach a high level, according to me. Not to confuse with recovery, that’s important for long-term success.
- Any pre-game rituals
Most golfers warm up for an hour or so before they start a tournament, and during that hour I like to listen to some music, warm up my body and relax a little as most times you’re rather amped up before a tournament. Thereafter I hit balls with most clubs in my golf bag, both shorter and longer shots to different targets and then finishing with some putting before it’s go time.

- What events do you participate in on campus other than athletics
I like to spend time with my girlfriend Karly, but other than that there is not much time left after golf, workouts, nutrition, planning etc.

- Career goals
My career goal is to pursue a professional career in competitive golf, while maintaining my passion for powerlifting, nutrition and recovery.
- What do you want people to know about you that they may not know already
I must say I’m rather predictable as I work by my programs and schedules towards my goals all day, but if anything I’m very interested in the world of cinema, including watching movies, how movies are made, what technology is used in movie production etc.
