Illinois Springfield softball will host the UIS Springfield Clinic Classic this Thursday and Friday inside the Springfield Clinic Dome at Scheels Sports Park. The event marks the first collegiate softball games played in the new indoor facility and begins a 10-game homestand for the Prairie Stars.
Illinois Springfield (3-3)
UIS enters the weekend at .500 after a competitive opening stretch that included a dominant 5-1 win over Union, a 4-0 shutout of Cedarville, and one-run losses to Palm Beach Atlantic and Shorter.
Rosie Bartletti has led the Prairie Stars in the circle, winning all three of her starts and appearing in every game last weekend. She earned GLVC Pitcher of the Week honors after striking out 22 batters and allowing zero earned runs across 14.1 innings.
At the plate, the lineup continues to take shape with a mix of returners and newcomers. Bartletti (.400),
Bailey Masching (.375), and
Olivia DeLuca (.286) anchor the returning core, while freshmen
Sidney Sawyer (.375) and
Emme Steward (.385) and grad transfer
Chloe Scroggins (.333) have made immediate contributions.
Lake ErieÂ
Lake Erie opens its season in Springfield, facing UIS on Thursday and No. 16 Indianapolis on Friday. The Storm went 2-44 last season and were picked 13th in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference preseason poll.
UIS swept Lake Erie at last year's Springfield Invitational, winning 9-0 in five innings and 9-1. The Storm did show improvement late last season and return several players with significant game experience.
Thomas More
Thomas More also begins its season this weekend, playing Missouri S&T on Thursday and UIS on Friday. The Saints finished 21-25 last year and went 4-6 against GLVC teams, including matchups with UIS, Quincy, Lewis, McKendree, and UIndy. They were picked 10th in the G-MAC preseason poll.
Thomas More returns an experienced group and is led offensively by senior catcher Peyton Powers, who hit .349 last season.
Missouri S&T (6-3)
Missouri S&T enters the weekend already nine games into its season with a winning record. The Miners opened with three straight victories and went 3-2 last weekend at the Alvy Early Memorial Classic with wins over St. Mary's, Arkansas-Monticello, and East Central.
S&T finished 19-34 last season but made a strong run in the GLVC Tournament before falling 2-0 to UIS in its fourth game.
No. 16 Indianapolis (4-0)
The Greyhounds arrive undefeated with in-region wins over Tiffin, Ashland, and Kentucky Wesleyan. UIndy is the reigning GLVC Tournament champion after a postseason surge that included walk-off wins in both the conference title game and the NCAA Midwest Regional final. Head coach Melissa Frost returns eight starters from last year's 42-win squad.
