Baseball Begins Conference Play In Kansas City

3/7/2024 12:15:00 PM

The University of Illinois Springfield baseball team will begin conference play in Kansas City against Rockhurst. The Prairie Stars and Hawks are set to play a four-game series. The series starts on Friday at 2:00 p.m. before a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 12:00 p.m. and finishing with a lone Sunday game at 1:00 p.m.

UIS (9-4)

The Prairie Stars are coming off of a three-game weekend sweep against a tough Trevecca Nazarene squad. In the lone Friday game, UIS took an early lead and was able to fend off a TNU comeback bid with insurance runs in the late innings for a 9-4 win. In both Saturday games Trevecca had a lead, but the Prairie Stars battled until their final out to earn an exciting win. In Game One of Saturday's doubleheader, the Prairie Stars were down trailing and down to their final out, but were somehow able to send the contest into extra innings. A walk-off single from Jacyk Uehling gave UIS an exciting 6-5 win. The Stars once again found themselves trailing going into the final innings in Game Two. A six-run sixth inning gave UIS the Prairie Stars the lead and more to win the game 9-6 and complete the sweep of the Trojans. The Prairie Stars jumped to #17 in the National Polls after the sweep and stayed at #2 in the Midwest Region.

Rockhurst (8-3)

The Hawks have had a relatively positive start to their 2024 campaign, a year after holding an overall record of 13-37. Rockhurst has earned series wins against Christian Brothers and Bemidji State, going 6-0. The Hawks split a four-game series against Parkside and dropped a ridiculously high-scoring contest to Washburn 19-29 in their most recent game. RU is 6-2 on their home field to start the year. Rockhurst have scored 107 runs in their 11 games so far. Four Hawks boast a batting average of .400 or higher, while nine different players have recorded 7 or more RBIs. Out of the bullpen, RU's Jake Canent holds a 4-0 record with a 0.55 ERA in 16.1 IP while only allowing 1 run.
