Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 The University of Illinois Springfield softball team ended its regular season on Sunday with a Senior Day sweep over Missouri S&T at LOLJOS in Springfield, Ill. The Prairie Stars won by scores of 4-0 and 12-4.
Â
The opener saw
Kayana Diederich throw a complete game shutout. She allowed seven hits in the game but did not walk anyone, and she struck out two. Diederich dominated the middle innings, allowing just two hits in the second through six innings. In the seventh, Missouri S&T loaded the bases, but Diederich got the tying run to strike out to end the game.
Â
UIS broke a 0-0 tie in the third with aggressive base running. The Prairie Stars had a double steal with two outs, and a wild throw scored senior
Calla Wickenhauser.
Danielle Dennis then scored on an infield single by
Carly Chovanec.
Â
Wickenhauser started another ally in the fifth with a leadoff double. Two straight sacrifices scored her with the team's third run, and UIS would add one more in the inning for the final run of the game. Wickenhauser, Chovanec, and
Ramsey Armstrong all finished with two hits.
Â
In game two, UIS scored eight times in the first inning, and Missouri S&T never got closer than seven the rest of the way.
Â
UIS's two seniors who saw action in the game both had good performances. Wickenhauser sparked the first inning rally with a walk, and then ended the game with a RBI single that led to the run-rule being in affect.
Addison Bryant threw a complete game on the mound, and also had three hits and two runs at the plate. On the mound, she struck out two and gave up just three earned runs.
Â
Lindsey LaDere and Dennis both had three hits in the second game. Every starter scored at least one run, including two by Bryant and
Kayana Diederich. Diederich hit a three-run homer in the game and led the team in RBI with three, and Chovanec and Armstrong had two RBI apiece.
Â
Wickenhauser, Bryant, and
Natalie Cokel were honored after the game. The trio have played in nearly a combined 400 games at UIS, and played roles in UIS advancing to back-to-back NCAA Regional Finals in 2018 and 2019.
Â
UIS ends the regular season with a 19-25 overall record and a 14-14 GLVC mark. The field for the 2021 GLVC Postseason Tournament will be announced later today.
