5/15/2021 7:28:00 PM

Box Score The No. 5 University of Illinois Springfield baseball team has advanced to the GLVC Tournament Championship game for the second consecutive time. The Prairie Stars will look to win their first conference tournament title after a 7-1 victory over Southern Indiana on Saturday in St. Charles, Mo.

Back-to-back extra-base hits in the fourth inning gave UIS the lead for good. Austin Alderman opened up the frame with a triple to right field. Chris Mathieu followed with a double that put UIS ahead by a 2-1 margin. A pair of fly outs advanced Mathieu two bases for another run.

That proved to be enough as the Prairie Stars received another great effort for their pitchers. UIS pitchers did not allow an earned run for the second straight game. The Prairie Stars allowed seven hits and struck out eight batters.

Chad Saner threw the first 5 1/3 innings and allowed just one unearned run. He struck out five and gave up just four hits. Cade Sestak stranded two runners after entering in the sixth inning with one out, and Mason Coon got the final two outs in the seventh.

In the eighth, UIS's offense broke the game open with four runs. The big hit was a three-run homer by Mathieu over the left-field fence. Ian Delleman and Luke Fitton each pitched a scoreless inning to close out the contest.

Mathieu finished the game with two hits, two runs, and four RBI. Brandon Bannon and Alderman had two hits apiece, and Alderman scored three times. Kal Youngquist had a run and a RBI.

UIS improves to 37-5 on the season. The Prairie Stars will face Lindenwood or Indianapolis in the GLVC Championship game tomorrow afternoon at 12:30 p.m.
