SPRINGFIELD, IL --- The Prairie Stars women's golf team won the UIS Spring Invite
, outlasting seven other teams and coming from behind to beat GLVC opponent Lewis on the final day.
Brooke Hill paced the Prairie Stars with a second place finish in the 46-player field. UIS totaled 640 for the two-days, beating Lewis by four strokes and outlasting five other GLVC teams in the field.
After the first round, UIS trailed Lewis by eight strokes as the Prairie Stars fired a team score of 329 on a windy day at Panther Creek. Hill had the overall lead after 18 holes, firing a four-over 76, one of just three scores in the 70's on the day.
UIS used a team score of 311 on the final day to come from behind and beat Lewis by four strokes, and shoot the best team score of the entire tournament. On Sunday, the Prairie Stars had four players shoot in the 70's, against led by Hill with a 77 and joined by
Jocelyn Matsen, who also carded a five-over 77.
Maria Espinosa finished sixth overall with an 83-78-161 while Matsen finished one back of her team mate after carding an 85-77-162.
Sara Posada finished just outside the top-ten with a T-11 finish, firing an 86-79-165 for the tournament.
Taryn Pittman rounded out the UIS top-five with a T-19 finish, shooting a pair of 85's on the weekend.
Playing as individuals,
Sasha Glickfield also finished T-17 with an 87-81-168 while
Amanda Greenan took 32
nd with a 95-85-180.
Jordan Neyens took T-34 with a pair of 91's while
Charlotte Ng finished 37
th with a 95-88-183.
Lindsey Storm and
Chelsey Witkowiak rounded out the UIS participants as Storm shot 99-91-190 and Witkowiak 95-96-191.
This is the Prairie Stars second win of the 2016-17 season, also winning the Dan Salisbury Memorial Invitation in October. Illinois Springfield will use the momentum to head into the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament next weekend at Annbriar Golf Course in Waterloo, Illinois.
