LEXINGTON, KY --- The Illinois Springfield women's golf team struggled in their opening round at the Saginaw Valley Spring Invite, but rallied in the second round, shaving 32 strokes off their score to finish in fourth place in the 19-team tournament. UIS was in sixth place after an opening day team score of 344, trailing two regional teams in Trevecca Nazarene and Saginaw Valley. However, a second round score of 312, put UIS alone in fourth place, as they shot the third best team score of the week.
Individually,
Brooke Hill led the way, finishing T-3 in the 105-player field. Hill shot an opening round 81 through difficult conditions, as only two players broke 80 on the day. Hill followed up that performance with a final round 75, the fourth best individual score of the tournament out of 211 total rounds.
The T-3 place finish for Hill is her second top-10 of the season and her two-day total of 156 is her second best score of the year, one stroke off her season best at the UIS Island Getaway.
Maria Espinosa finished T-18 with rounds of 86 and 78 for a total of 164.
Jocelyn Matsen took third for UIS and finished alone in 23
rd place with scores of 86 and 79.
Sara Posada and
Taryn Pittman closed out the scoring for UIS with totals of 172 and 173, respectively.
Chelsey Witkowiak, who competed as an individual, finished T-54 with scores of 90 and 87. Witkowiak finished T-4 out of 14 individuals.
The Prairie Stars will return to the course on April 1
st and 2
nd when they travel to Daytona Beach, FL for the Embry-Riddle Bash at the Beach held at LPGA International.
