Prairie Stars Throttle Eagles

SPRINGFIELD, IL – The University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) women's basketball team throttled Robert Morris University-Springfield in a 106-27 victory on Wednesday.

UIS (5-1) poured in 36 points during the first quarter to lead the Eagles (1-5) 36-15 through one quarter. The Prairie Stars outscored the Eagles 70-12 for the remaining three quarters. UIS led Robert Morris Springfield 60-19 at halftime and 82-23 through three quarters.

Jasmine Sangster matched her career high of 17 points to lead UIS. The 5-foot-6 sophomore guard from Round Lake, IL also set a career high with four steals.

"Jasmine has played really well for us for the first part of the season, especially late in close games when we've been on the road," UIS coach Mark Kost said.

Tehya Fortune set a season high of 16 points. The 5-foot-7 guard from Chicago, IL drained 4-of-6 (66.7 percent) shots from 3-point range.

"Tehya had been struggling, especially from 3-point range, for the first four games of the year after shooting [37 percent from the perimeter] last year. She really got it dialed in against Purdue Northwest and really got it going [on Wednesday]. So, I think she's out of her little slump."

Destiny Ramsey contributed 13 points and three steals. Airiana Smith and Katelyn Rosner each scored eight points. Shelbi Patterson contributed seven points and five assists. Gabrielle Sanders and Chasitee Shroyer both recorded six points. Val Meissner provided five points. Grace Weber, Che Jones and Erin Bolskar each produced four points. Reje Pitchford and Brianna Mefford each netted three points while Cheyanne Danner rounded out the UIS scoring with two points.

Sanders and Mefford put together career highs of 10 rebounds and eight rebounds, respectively. Jones dished out a career-high six assists.

Rosner, Mefford and Danner blocked two shots apiece. The Prairie Stars have powered to a nation-leading 8.3 blocks per game this season, which is 1.0 blocks per game more than the second-leading team.

The Prairie Stars benefitted as every UIS player saw at least seven minutes of action.

"It was great to get some other players in the game. In a 26-game season, sometimes numbers are going to get called, whether it's foul trouble or anything else. Hopefully they built their confidence."

E'Lexus Murrel led Robert Morris-Springfield with nine points. Kellen Spanger pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.

Robert Morris-Springfield struggled on offense, committing 25 turnovers. The Prairie Stars only turned the ball over eight times and outscored the Eagles 40-7 off turnovers. UIS collected 16 steals while Robert Morris-Springfield came up with just six.

The Prairie Stars executed a fluid offense, tallying 26 assists. Robert Morris-Springfield only tallied three dimes.

UIS rolled to a 62-to-34 advantage on the glass and a 39-to-4 advantage on second-chance points.

The Prairie Stars outscored the Eagles 40-16 in the paint and 18-4 on fast-break points.

UIS knocked down 38-of-84 (45.2 percent) shots from the field and hit 14-of-35 (40 percent) shots from 3-point range. Robert Morris-Springfield converted 12-of-57 (21.1 percent) attempts from the floor and 1-of-19 (5.3 percent) shots from the perimeter.

The Prairie Stars drained 16-of-21 (76.2 percent) attempts from the free-throw line while the Eagles made 2-of-10 (20 percent) attempts from the charity stripe.

Among the top single-game team performances in UIS history, the Prairie Stars finished second in points (106), second in 3-point field goals made (14), third in rebounds (62) and fourth in field goals made (38).

Ramsey moved to ninth in UIS Division II history with 81 career offensive rebounds.

Among Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) leaders, Ramsey and Rosner rank first and second in the conference with 2.7 blocks per game and 2.3 blocks per game, respectively. Ramsey also ranks second in the conference with 3.5 offensive rebounds per game.

UIS opens the Great Lakes Valley Conference season with Missouri S&T (4-2) on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Rolla, MO. Both teams picked up two wins against common opponents in the Lady Miner Classic on Nov. 10-11 in Rolla. UIS topped Purdue University Northwest (0-4) 79-73 and earned a 67-66 win over LeMoyne-Owen College (3-3). Missouri S&T captured a 93-84 win over LeMoyne-Owen and an 88-80 victory over Purdue Northwest. The Prairie Stars also secured an 80-72 road win over Purdue Northwest last Saturday.

"We saw Missouri S&T twice when we played in the Lady Miner Classic three weeks ago. They beat the same two teams we did by similar scores. You can't look at scores and judge a whole lot, but it'll be a heck of a contest, which most of them are in the GLVC. If we go up there and play like we are capable of playing, we'll have a chance to win in at the end."
