UIS Shuts Down Lady Miners

ROLLA, MO – The University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) women's basketball team shut down Missouri S&T with a 72-46 victory during Saturday's Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) matchup.
 
Missouri S&T (4-3, 0-1) entered the contest ranked sixth in the nation with a .412 3-point field-goal percentage. The Lady Miners had also made 45.6 percent of their shots from the field. UIS (6-1, 1-0) held Missouri S&T to a 28.6-percent (18-of-63) shooting effort from the floor while limiting the Lady Miners to just 1-of-7 (14.3 percent) shooting from the perimeter. The Prairie Stars converted 28-of-67 (41.8 percent) shots from the floor and 9-of-24 (37.5 percent) attempts from downtown.
 
"It was a great all-around effort by our team, especially on the defensive end," UIS coach Mark Kost said.
 
The Prairie Stars held a 17-to-5 margin in points off turnover and topped the Lady Miners 9-0 in fast-break points.
 
"Our defensive pressure jumpstarted our offense and got us baskets in transition."
 
Missouri S&T open the third quarter with a 9-2 run and cut the lead to eight, but was unable to overcome the UIS roster depth.

Katelyn Rosner set a UIS single-game record with five blocks. The 6-foot-2 sophomore center from Chicago, IL contributed six points and nine rebounds. Rosner has 19 blocks on the season, which ranks seventh among UIS Division II single-season leaders.
 
Destiny Ramsey put together a double-double with game-highs 16 points and 10 rebounds. Shelbi Patterson notched 15 points and three steals. Valerie Meissner and Jasmine Sangster tallied nine points each. Tehya Fortune recorded eight points. Reje Pitchford added five points. Chasitee Shroyer and Gabrielle Sanders rounded out the UIS scoring effort with two points apiece. Sanders also blocked two shots.
 
The Prairie Stars totaled eight blocks. UIS leads all NCAA Division II teams with 8.3 blocks per game.
 
Michelle Borgen led Missouri S&T with 13 points. Maddie Raley pulled down a team-high seven rebounds.
 
UIS outrebounded Missouri S&T 43-42.
 
The Lady Miners sank 9-of-13 (69.2 percent) attempts from the free-throw line while the Prairie Stars made 7-of-8 (87.5 percent) attempts from the charity stripe.

UIS jumped out to a 19-7 lead through the first quarter and carried a 33-18 advantage into halftime. The Prairie Stars led 50-32 through three quarters and outscored the Lady Miners 22-14 in the fourth quarter.
 
UIS meets Rockhurst University (6-2, 2-0) in a GLVC matchup next Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in TRAC.
