Prairie Stars Challenge No. 14 Hawks

SPRINGFIELD, IL – The University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) women's soccer team progress through the season with a Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) match on Sunday.
 
SETTING THE SCENE
UIS (8-4-4, 5-4-3) challenges Quincy University (12-2, 10-1) on Sunday at 12 p.m. for Senior Day at Kiwanis Stadium. The Hawks are ranked No. 14 in the latest United Soccer Coaches (USC) NCAA Division II poll.
 
WHAT'S HAPPENING LATELY
UIS finished 1-0-1 in GLVC play last week. The Prairie Stars fought to a 1-1 double-overtime draw with the University of Wisconsin-Parkside (2-10-2, 1-8-2) on Friday. Emily Matsen found the back of the net for the Prairie Stars. UIS closed out the week on Sunday by earning a 1-0 victory over Lewis University (5-6-2, 4-5-2), its first win over the Flyers in program history. Meghan Delaney put the Prairie Stars on the board in the 29th minute off a pass from Maggie Juhlin. UIS surpassed the single-season marks for most wins and most conference wins since becoming an NCAA Division II program. The Prairie Stars are currently tied for sixth in the conference standings.
 
The Hawks picked up two conference wins last week. Quincy battled past the University of Indianapolis (6-6-1, 5-5-1) in a 2-0 win on Friday. The Hawks then earned a 1-0 victory over UW-Parkside on Sunday. Quincy currently leads the GLVC standings and is on a six-match winning streak.
 
STARS OF NOTE
Meghan Delaney leads the Prairie Stars with 11 points behind four goals and three assists. The freshman from Sauget, IL is tied for seventh in the conference in points and is tied for fifth in the GLVC in goals and assists. Emily Matsen and Karisa Rogers make up parts of a fifth-place tie in the conference with four goals. Taylor Mraz and Kaylan Mills are both involved in a fifth-place tie in the GLVC with three assists. Madisyn Coudriet has netted three goals while Maggie Juhlin and Kayla Meyer have each provided two assists.
 
A LOOK AT THE OPPONENT
Mackenzie Rief leads the Hawks with 14 points behind six goals and two assists. Among GLVC leaders, Rief ranks first in game-winning goals (6), second in points and is tied for second in goals. Abby Pulliam is tied for fifth in the conference with three assists and Katie Heiligensteing is tied for fifth in the GLVC with four goals. Heiligenstein has also contributed three game-winning goals. Alex Severino ranks eighth in the conference with 0.3 goals per match. Cassidy Foley has notched eight points off three goals and two assists. Maddie Bauer has dished out two assists. Megan Swanson ranks third in the GLVC with a .914 save percentage and leads the conference with 10 shutouts.
 
KEY DECISIONS
The Prairie Stars claimed their first win over a ranked opponent in program history on Sept. 5 when they topped Lindenwood University (5-8-1), which was ranked No. 25 at the time, in a 1-0 win. UIS captured a 1-0 win over Indianapolis on Oct. 8.
 
Quincy outlasted McKendree University (10-1-3, 7-1-3), ranked No. 16 at the time, in a 1-0 win on Oct. 1. Maryville University (7-3-3-, 6-2-3) handed Quincy its only conference loss of the season, earned a 1-0 victory on Sept. 24.
 
LOOKING AHEAD
The Prairie Stars wrap up the season by engaging with Rockhurst University (7-7, 5-6) next Wednesday at 5 p.m. in a GLVC matchup at Kiwanis Stadium.
 
UIS DIVISION II RECORD BOOK WATCH
Rogers ranks third in career points (21) and career goals (9). Among career leaders, Matsen is tied for first in game-winning goals (4), fourth in goals (8) and tied for fifth in points (18). Courtney Johnson is tied for second in career shutouts (7) and Mraz is tied for fourth in career assists (6). Mraz, Mills and Delaney make up parts of a fifth-place tie for assists in a single season.
