SPRINGFIELD, IL – The University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) women's soccer team encounter the University of Wisconsin-Parkside and Lewis University in Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) action this weekend.
SETTING THE SCENE
UIS (7-4-3, 4-4-2) faces off with UW-Parkside (2-9-1, 1-7-1) on Friday at 12 p.m. in Somers, WI. The Prairie Stars then greet Lewis University (5-5-2, 4-4-2) on Sunday at 12 p.m. at Kiwanis Stadium.
WHAT'S HAPPENING LATELY
The Prairie Stars finished 1-1 in GLVC action last week. UIS dropped a 1-0 loss to Bellarmine University on Friday. The Prairie Stars captured a 1-0 victory over the University of Indianapolis on Sunday behind a free-kick goal from
Madisyn Coudriet.
Courtney Johnson recorded her second shutout of the season.
The Flyers went 1-1 in conference play last week. Lewis fell to Indianapolis in a 1-0 loss last Friday. The Flyers followed up by earning a 1-0 win over UW-Parkside last Sunday.
STARS OF NOTE
Karisa Rogers has notched four goals this season to lead the Prairie Stars. The junior forward from St. Charles, MO is tied for third among GLVC leaders in goals.
Meghan Delaney is tied for seventh in the conference with nine points behind three goals and three assists.
Taylor Mraz,
Kaylan Mills and Delaney each make up parts of a fourth-place tie in the conference with three assists. Coudriet and
Emily Matsen have each produced three goals and two game-winning goals. Mraz has added two game-winning goals and
Kayla Meyer has dished out two assists.
A LOOK AT THE OPPONENTS
UIS put together a 1-0 win over UW-Parkside last year. Maycee Kroening leads the Rangers with two goals.
Lewis took down the Prairie Stars with a 3-1 win last year. Cali Havelka-Vanderplow has contributed eight points off three goals and two assists to pace the Flyers. Mallory Richardson is tied for fourth in the GLVC with three assists. Mackenzie Fuller has also delivered two assists.
The Flyers and the Prairie Stars are both fighting for a GLVC Tournament spot as both teams are tied for eighth place in the GLVC standings.
KEY DECISIONS
The Prairie Stars earned their first victory over a ranked opponent in program history on Sept. 5 when they captured a 1-0 win over Lindenwood University (4-7-1), which was ranked No. 25 in the United Soccer Coaches (USC) NCAA Division II poll at the time. UIS also powered to a 3-0 win over Drury University (6-5-1, 4-5) on Sept. 15. Maryville University (7-3-2, 6-2-2) secured a 2-1 victory over UIS on Sept. 22.
Lewis overwhelmed Maryville in a 4-1 victory on Sept. 17. Rockhurst University (6-6, 4-5) claimed a 1-0 overtime victory over the Flyers on Sept. 8 and Bellarmine fought to a double-overtime scoreless tie with Lewis on Oct. 1.
LOOKING AHEAD
UIS continues GLVC play by hosting Quincy University (10-2, 8-1), ranked No. 15 in the latest national poll, next Sunday at 12 p.m. at Kiwanis Stadium.
UIS DIVISION II RECORD BOOK WATCH
Rogers ranks third in career goals (9) and career points (21). Matsen is tied for fourth in career goals (7) and Mraz is tied for fourth in career assists (6). Johnson sits third among the career leaders in shutouts (6). Mraz, Mills and Delaney are each tied for third among single-season leaders with three on the season.
