Prairie Stars Fall to Southern Indiana in GLVC Bout

SPRINGFIELD, IL --- Illinois Springfield (3-3, 0-2) fell to Southern Indiana (7-1, 2-0) by a score of 89-62 in the second GLVC game of the week. The Prairie Stars surrendered 50 points in the first half and fell behind by 18 points and could never recover. Caroline Kelty led the way offensively with 17 points for UIS while Syerra Cunningham narrowly missed a double-double with 11 rebounds and eight points.

In the first quarter, UIS went blow-for-blow with the Screaming Eagles in the high scoring first ten minutes. A Cunningham layup gave UIS a 6-5 lead with 7:30 to play but USI used a 7-0 run later in the quarter to build an eight point advantage.  Three pointers from Reje Pitchford and Kelty cut the deficit to just one with 2:10 remaining and a free throw from Shelbi Patterson brought the game back to even. The Screaming Eagles ended the quarter on a 5-0 run to take a 24-19 lead after ten minutes.

USI used a 14-0 run to begin the second quarter to take control of the game, taking a 19-point lead. The Prairie Stars trailed by 18 at the half, shooting just 34 percent against 61 percent from the visitors.

On the game, UIS shot at just under a 37 percent mark and made just 10-of-20 from the charity stripe. Kelty led the way with 17 points while Destiny Ramsey added 15 points and four rebounds, dished out two assists, blocked a shot, and had two steals.

Airiana Smith and Pitchford each hit a three off the bench for UIS in the loss.

The Prairie Stars will turn to non-conference play for the remainder of the 2016 calendar year, traveling to Oakland City on Monday, December 12th before competing in the Kentucky Wesleyan Classic on the 18th and 19th against Trevecca Nazarene and Kentucky Wesleyan.
