RIO GRANDE, PR - The University of Illinois Springfield women's golf team is in fifth place at the UIS Island Getaway after shooting a 314 at the Ocean Course of the Rio Mar Country Club.
The Prairie Stars' 314 ties a record for the lowest 18-hole score in the program's history. UIS shot a 314 back on September 5 of this season. Indianapolis leads the 12-team field after one round of play with a score of 304. West Texas A&M's Whitlee Woods' is the overall leader after 18 holes with a score of 73.
Two Prairie Stars are tied for 10th place. Junior
Jocelyn Matsen (Springfield, Ill.) and freshman
Kayla Yn (Arcadia, Calif.) both shot a 77 on Monday to put themselves in the top ten. Yn's 77 is tied for the best score of her UIS career. She fired a 77 back on September 27, part of her first place finish at the Quincy Fall Classic.
Senior
Becca Ramirez (Springfield, Ill.) finished Monday's round with a score of 79 to put her in a tie for 20th place. Freshman
Maria Espinosa (Ibague, Colombia) sits two strokes back of Ramirez with an 81 while freshman
Charlotte Ng (Hong Kong) rounded out the UIS team efforts with a 92.
Four Prairie Stars competed as individuals at the tourney, led by sophomores
Taryn Pittman (Aledo, Texas) and
Brooke Hill (Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada) with scores of 85 and 86, respectively.
The final round of the UIS Island Getaway begins tomorrow with a 7:30 a.m. shotgun start.
