The year of 2014 brought us many great moments in University of Illinois Springfield Athletics. To close out the year, the Prairie Stars will count down the top 14 moments of 2014. Events will range from academic successes, winning games and highlighting individual accomplishments.
#12 - Alexandria Smith Sets Single-Season Record; UIS makes return trip to GLVC TournamentIn her first season as a Prairie Star, then-sophomore
Alexandria Smith set single-season records in strikeouts (130) and wins (16). The sophomore was 14th in the conference in regular starters with a 2.75 ERA. Smith tossed 178 innings in 30 appearances, 24 complete games and owns four shutouts. The East Peoria, Ill., ranked sixth in the GLVC in total strikeouts with 130. Smith fanned a season-high nine against Indianapolis and has recorded five or more strikeouts in 13 contests.
The UIS softball team earned a seventh-seed in the GLVC tournament after missing it in the 2013 season. The Prairie Stars dropped the first game to UMSL who went to the NCAA Tournament, but rebounded with a win against Lewis, 3-1. The Prairie Stars finished with a 27-25 record on the season.
