#10 - Ben Main Sets Division II Singles Wins Record

The year of 2014 brought us many great moments in University of Illinois Springfield Athletics. To close out the year, the Prairie Stars will count down the top 14 moments of 2014. Events will range from academic successes, winning games and highlighting individual accomplishments. Countdown will be in chronological order beginning back in the start of 2014.

#10 - Main Graduates with Division II Singles Wins Record

Senior Ben Main spent his last season setting records. Main graduated with 27 victories in singles action and 26 wins in doubles play to own both records for the UIS Tennis Program in the Division II era. He was a four-year player under now retired coach Manny Velasco. Main's best performance came as a sophomore when he was 13-7 in singles action - mainly at the No. 3 position and 9-11 in doubles play with Matt McGowan.

In addition to competition, the UIS tennis programs had some fun off the courts when the team won the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee's Penny War to raise money for Make-A-Wish. The tennis program had enough pennies which were positive points to out number its silver collection. In all they had 718 points as they separated their silver from the pennies and won the war. The seniors then pied new head coach Tom Rees in the face at a basketball game as a reward to their efforts.
