NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Junior
Jamall Millison topped the University of Illinois Springfield men's basketball team in scoring with 17 points in the 82-63 exhibition loss at Vanderbilt at Memorial Gymnasium on Thursday night.
Millison (Bolingbrook, Ill.) went 6-for-13 from the floor including three long balls. Classmate
Sammie Elem (Chicago) joined him in double figures in his UIS debut as he tallied a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while also adding two blocks. Senior
Dylan Sparkman (East Peoria, Ill.) wrapped up the double-digit scoring with 10 points on a 4-for-8 shooting performance and two makes at the line.
The Prairie Stars started out slow as Vanderbilt took a 17-0 lead before a traditional three-point play from sophomore Mark Weems (Chicago) gave UIS its first points of the night. The Commodores kept their lead in double figures, but UIS was able to keep it manageable against the SEC opponent. Millison hit a triple to close the gap to 15 before halftime, but Vanderbilt answered back with a three of its own to extend the advantage to 45-27.
In the opening stanza, the Commodores shot above 50 percent, while holding UIS to 29.7 shooting. The also outrebounded UIS 24-15.
Vanderbilt took its biggest lead of the game, 62-37, at the 12:35 mark. The Prairie Stars were able to close the gap a little on successful makes from Sparkman, Elem and junior
Davi Austin (Newark, N.J.), while the home team came up empty on each of its tries. A triple from Millison with less than eight to play made it a 15-point game, the closest UIS would get for the remainder of the day.
Riley Lachance totaled a game-high 24 points hitting six of his nine field goals from outside the arc. Shelton Mitchell scored 21 points and just missed a double-double with a team-best nine rebounds. Damian Jones also scored in double figures with 12 points.
For the game, Vanderbilt shot 50 percent on 33-for-66 from the floor, while UIS went 23-for-63 for a 36.5 percent clip. The Prairie Stars sunk all nine of their first-half free throws and finished the game, going 12-for-17 from the line.
