Haley Maxwell and
Shelby Geers led the attack for the University of Illinois Springfield volleyball team, but it was not enough against hot-hitting Southern Indiana as the Eagles won 3-1 (27-29, 25-15, -16, -18) on Saturday afternoon at TRAC.
Geers (Urbana, Ill.) recorded a team-best 14 kills 36 total swings, while Maxwell (Windsor, Ill.) dropped 13 kills on 23 attempts to hit a team-high .391. Maxwell also stopped one block solo and aided on another stop. Junior
Rachelle Wiegand (Redbud, Ill.) and freshman
Lexi Hall (Champaign, Ill.) combined for 45 assists on the Prairie Stars 51 total kills.
Up 21-11 in the first set, the Prairie Stars looked to have the game wrapped up, but Southern Indiana had a different idea. The Eagles sparked a 10-3 run to tie the first set at 24-all. With the score at 26-26, a service error followed by an attack error swung the stanza back in Illinois Springfield's favor as a final kill from senior
Nikki Madoch (Algonquin, Ill.) gave UIS the win. The set win is just the second time in program history that UIS has won a set from Southern Indiana.
The momentum of the 10-point rally however changed the game as Southern Indiana went on to win the next sets with little trouble. In set two, the Eagles jumped out to a quick 7-1 lead. USI hit .286 in the second game and held the Prairie Stars, who hit .350 in the first set, to just a .065 attacking percentage.
The Eagles progressed as the match continued and hit .300 and .424 in the third and fourth set, respectively to win the match in four. For the match, USI hit .316.
For Southern Indiana, Erica Oberbroeckling tallied a match-high 16 kills, while three other Eagles recorded double-figure kill totals. Quin Shoultz just missed a double-double with 40 assists and nine digs.
The Prairie Stars now take a break from conference competition at the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover. UIS learns its opponents on Monday. Matches begin on Friday in Aurora, Ill.
