AURORA, Ill. - The University of Illinois Springfield volleyball team hit an outstanding .506 for the match as the Prairie Stars dominated Lake Erie, 3-0 (-18, -13, 15) before taking down Walsh, 3-0 (-7, -19, -20) at GLVC/GLIAC Crossover on Friday afternoon.
In the two games, senior
Shelby Geers (Urbana, Ill.) recorded 26 kills on 42 swings with just four errors to hit .524. Geers has now tallied double-figure kills in five straight matches. Junior
Nikki Madoch (Algonquin, Ill.) was second on the team with 15 total kills and just one error to hit .571.
Sophomore Becca Stocyznski (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) also aided in the Prairie Stars' attack with 15 kills, including nine against Walsh and hit .591 to help UIS record a .490 attack percentage.
In the first game against Lake Erie, the Prairie Stars had 46 kills on 81 attempts with just five errors. The five miscues are a season-low, while seven aces are a season-high. Freshman
Lexi Hall (Champaign, Ill.) dished out 24 of UIS' 41 assists, while junior
Rachelle Wiegand (Redbud, Ill.) accounted for 12.
The Prairie Stars allowed two ties in the early goings of the first set, but from there it was Illinois Springfield's game to take. The Prairie Stars recorded just one error on 35 attempts to hit .543, a season-best, for the opening game.
Set two had a similar beginning to the opening one as Lake Erie kept it close early, but UIS then sprinted out to a 14-6 lead. Seven of the Storm's 13 points came on seven UIS miscues included four service errors.
The final stanza was the most competitive and saw six ties and five lead changes. Lake Erie held the early lead until UIS knotted the score at 10-all. UIS then went on an 11-3 run to take back control of the match. The Prairie Stars closed out the match and won just their third match in straight sets this season.
Aysa Hobbs topped the Storm with 12 kills, while Sara Aultz recorded 8. As a team, Lake Erie hit .266 and despite the second set, recorded above .300 attacking in the other two sets.
In the second match of the day, UIS raced out to a 13-5 lead in the opening set. The Prairie Stars held the Cavaliers to just two more points as they went on to win, 25-7.
Illinois Springfield led from start to finish in the second stanza and never let Walsh get closer than five throughout the game.
The final set, similar to the first match of the season, was the most competitive. There were 10 tie scores and three lead changes until the final one swung in UIS' favor, 18-17. The Prairie Stars closed out the day on an 8-2 run that included five kills and two aces to secure the sweep.
UIS hit above .400 for the second straight match and recorded a single-digit error total as well. The Prairie Stars tallied 37 assists on their 42 assists with 22 coming from Hall.
