AURORA, Ill. - Another strong attack from senior
Shelby Geers helped the University of Illinois Springfield volleyball team to a straight-set sweep against Northwood on Saturday afternoon to close out the GLVC/GLIAC Crossover.
The Prairie Stars (7-12), 3-0 (25-21, -17, -13), victory was its third straight and fifth this season. UIS hit .304 for the match with 35 kills on 79 swings with just 11 errors. Northwood (6-12) hit just .052 as the Timberwolves only hit above .100 in set two.
Geers (Urbana, Ill.) recorded 11 kills, her sixth straight match with double figures, as well as recording a six block assists. Sophomore
Becca Stoczynski (Hoffman Estates, Ill.) recorded seven block assists, her best performance this season, while also adding five kills. Freshman
Courtney Schutt (Waterloo, Ill.) was second on the team with six kills on 13 attempts with one error.
UIS overcame a five-point deficit as UIS tallied three straight attack errors in the early goings. The Prairie Stars the righted their course to go on an 8-4 run to tie the game at nine. On a Geers and Stocyznski block, UIS took the lead and never looked back.
In set two, it was the Prairie Stars who jumped out to an early 10-5 lead. The Timberwolves pulled to within 14-12, but UIS dug deep and sparked a 7-2 run and eventually win on a final kill from Schutt.
The Prairie Stars led from start to finish in the final set and hit .476 with 12 kills including four from Geers and three from Schutt. Northwood got as close as two in the early part of the match, but UIS then went on to hold a six-point more lead to close out the set.
