Madelyn Miller-Ross will make the fifth NCAA Championship appearance of her career on Saturday, and her second consecutive appearance at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field Championships, as the UIS distance runner competes in the women's 5,000 meters in Emporia, Kansas.
Hosted by Emporia State at Francis G. Welch Stadium, the championship meet features the facility's nationally known 'Golden Oval,' a distinctive gold-colored eight-lane track unlike any other in collegiate track & field.
The senior from East Moline qualified after posting the fastest outdoor 5K time by a Midwest Region athlete during the regular season, running 16:19.76 earlier this spring. That performance earned Miller-Ross a place in a national championship field featuring 22 of the top distance runners in NCAA Division II.
Miller-Ross enters the race as the lone representative from the GLVC and one of several Midwest standouts in the field. Grand Valley State qualified three runners, including Abby VanderKooi and Anastasia Tucker, as Miller-Ross enters the field among the region's top contenders. Adams State and Chico State each placed multiple athletes into the championship race as well, continuing their tradition of national distance-running success.
The field is led by Colorado School of Mines senior Grace Strongman, who owns the top NCAA Division II mark this season at 15:47.89 and is the only athlete in the field to break 16 minutes this year. Reigning national champion Tristian Spence of Adams State also returns after running 16:01.94 this season, while teammate Maggie McCleskey gives Adams State a pair of national-caliber runners in the event.
The women's 5,000 meters is scheduled for 6:55 p.m. Saturday and will serve as the second-to-last event of the national championship meet.
The race will be streamed live on NCAA.com, with live results provided by Leone Timing.
