Illinois Springfield will compete for a GLVC championship Saturday morning when the 2026 Great Lakes Valley Conference Men's Cross Country Championship is held in Springfield, Mo., with Drury serving as host. The postseason meet will begin at 9 a.m. CT with the 48th annual men's 8,000-meter race.
The Prairie Stars enter the championship as one of four teams that have separated themselves at the top of the GLVC this season. According to the USTFCCCA Cross Country Rating Index (XCRI), Lewis, Missouri S&T, Drury and Illinois Springfield are the top four teams in the conference and all rank among the top 10 in the Midwest Region based on this season's performances. The closely matched group sets up a competitive championship race on Saturday.
UIS has built a strong postseason résumé throughout the fall. The Prairie Stars defeated NCAA Division I Eastern Illinois at the Redbird Invitational hosted by Illinois State and earned wins over regionally ranked teams at the Lewis Crossover. Most recently, UIS was the top-finishing Midwest team at the UAH Charger Invitational in late October, where the Stars competed against teams from across NCAA DII.Â
UIS showed particular strength in its team depth at Huntsville, with its five scoring runners separated by just 48 seconds and averaging 25:00 for the 8K. Another tightly packed performance could be important Saturday as the Prairie Stars look to contend with the top teams in the conference.
The Stars bring postseason experience throughout their lineup, led by fourth-year runners
Joey Karlesky and
Matt Padilla. Both earned All-GLVC honors in 2025, while Karlesky was also an All-GLVC selection in 2024.
Junior Dominic Cantarini also enters the championship with significant postseason experience. Cantarini was named the GLVC Freshman of the Year in 2024 after finishing as the conference's top newcomer at the championship meet.
Owen Whelan has emerged as another key piece of the UIS lineup, leading the Prairie Stars in two races during the regular season.
The GLVC Championship will also determine the conference's individual postseason honors. The top 20 finishers will earn All-GLVC recognition, while the individual winner will be named GLVC Runner of the Year. The top-finishing freshman will earn GLVC Freshman of the Year honors.
The women's 6,000-meter championship race will follow the men's race at 10 a.m. The meet will be streamed live behind a paywall on the GLVC Sports Network, and live statistics will be available through TRXC Timing.
