Women’s Basketball Hosts Drury Before Road Trip to William Jewell

The University of Illinois Springfield women's basketball team will continue their season this week with a home game Wednesday night, and an away game Saturday afternoon. The Prairie Stars take on the Drury Panthers on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m., and the William Jewell Cardinals on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.

UIS (5-7, 3-3)

UIS will try to return to winning ways in both the GLVC and overall. The Stars are currently tied for 7th in the GLVC standings.

On Dec. 31, UIS welcomed Lake Superior State to TRAC for an in-region matchup. It was a game of runs on Sunday as UIS led 28-22 at the halftime break. The Stars and Lakers traded blows in the third quarter with UIS leading 43-41 heading into the final frame. LSSU scored 27 points in the fourth quarter, which included 14 free-throws. Amaya Asher led UIS in scoring with 14 points while Jessenia Lawson was close with 13. LSSU left Springfield with a 68-56 win. Jessenia Lawson and Shariah Gailes each had seven rebounds during the game. UIS had the advantage in steals at 16-5 and second chance points at 18-6. UIS shot 21-for-83 (25.3%) from the floor, while going 5-of-28 (17.9%) from three. LSSU shot 22-for-50 (44.0%) from the field, including 3-of-14 (21.4%) from three. LSSU had three separate players that finished with double-digit points. Gracey Metz was the game's leading scorer with 16. 

Drury (8-3, 3-2)

Drury will all be attempting to return to winning ways after dropping two straight games. The Panthers are currently tied for 4th in the GLVC standings. 

Drury also last played a home game on New Year's Eve against Missouri Southern. MSSU came out of the gate on fire, scoring the first eighteen points of the game. The Lions built their lead to 47-29 at the half. MSSU wouldn't allow Drury to get close again as the Lions won 80-57. Drury's standout performer was Caitlynn Daniels, who finished with 29 points on 10-of-13 shooting. Beth Matas Martin had 11 points of her own. Drury shot 22-of-62 (35.5%) from the field, including 4-of-19 (21.1%) from three. MSSU shot 32-for-68 (47.1%) from the field, including 5-of-19 (26.3%) from three. MSSU outrebounded Drury 43-32. 

William Jewell (3-8, 1-4) 

The Cardinals currently sit 12th in the GLVC.

WJC played their most recent game on December 19 against Avila University, which the Cardinals won 75-57. Avila held a 12-10 lead after the first quarter, but Jewell took control in the second quarter with a 21-10 run. The third quarter was all Jewell as they expanded their lead to as much as 26. Emree Zars finished with 14, as Chloe Frank (13) and Ayden Shannon (10) contributed double-digit point totals off the bench. WJC shot 22-of-51 (43.1%) from the field, including 11-for-19 (57.9%) from three. Avila shot 19-of-52 (36.5%) from the field, including just 1-for-10 (10.0%) from three. Jewell travels to Southwest Baptist on Wednesday before welcoming UIS on Saturday.
