The University of Illinois Springfield baseball team has officially been crowned the NCAA Division II team statistical champion for strikeouts per nine innings.

The Prairie Stars finished the season with an average of 11.5 strikeouts per nine innings, retiring 524 batters in 408.2 innings. Charleston (10.8), Quincy (10.5), Lenoir-Rhyne (10.4), and UNC Pembroke (10.2) rounded out the top five.

Ryan Carmack, the individual runner-up in strikeouts per nine, led the Prairie Stars by striking out 119 opponents in 66.2 innings. Carmack broke the UIS record for strikeouts in a single game in his UIS debut against Lenoir-Rhyne in February. He retired 14 opponent batters in just five innings. Carmack went on to set the record once more when he recorded 15 strikeouts in six innings against Bemidji State two weeks later.

Chad Saner finished 43rd in the division for strikeouts per nine innings with 89 K's in 73.1 innings. Adam Brouwer also appeared on the list at No. 65.

It is the fourth time that UIS baseball has claimed a statistical title. The Prairie Stars were the team champion in slugging percentage (.581), home runs per game (1.86), and runs per game (9.4) in 2018.
