The University of Illinois Springfield women's basketball team will continue their season with two conference games in Missouri against Maryville on Thursday at 5:15 p.m. and Missouri S&T on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
UIS (3-2, 1-1)
The Prairie Stars had two games in the past week, a conference matchup against Rockhurst last Wednesday, and a game against region opponent Kentucky Wesleyan on Monday night.
In the GLVC game against the Rockhurst Hawks, points came at a high rate with the Stars falling 87-109 in Kansas City. Rockhurst took the lead in the second quarter and never gave it up. Jazlynn Givens and Michaela Gibbons led the Prairie Stars in scoring with 14 points apiece. UIS shot 43.1% (25-58) from the field, which included 33.3% (6-18) from three. Rockhurst shot over 50% from the field for the game. UIS's defense forced 13 turnovers and scored 14 points off of those turnovers.
On Monday night in Kentucky, UIS fell to its second defeat in as many games as the Panthers held on to a big first half lead. KWC led UIS 50-24 at the break and held the Prairie Stars to only 8 second quarter points. UIS' comeback attempt came up short in the second half. Jessenia Lawson led the Stars with 14 points along with 6 rebounds. Saharra Murphy, Liz Uhl, and Michaela Gibbons had 11 points, while Amaya Asher added 10 of her own. UIS shot 42.6% (26-61) from the field, while shooting 23.1% (3-13) from three. The Prairie Star defense held KWC to 43.8% shooting from the field, while forcing 21 turnovers.
Maryville (2-4, 0-2)
The Saints began their GLVC campaign last week with two losses.
On Saturday the Saints dropped a fierce game to preseason favorites, Lewis, 71-72. The Flyers took their first lead of the game since the beginning stages with two minutes left in the third quarter. Back and forth action followed for the remainder of the game as Maryville missed the game-tying three point attempt in the final seconds. The Saints had four players as double-digit scorers; Carsyn Fearday (16), Antoinette Mussorici (15), Haidyn Pitsch (10), and Faith Hawthorne (15). Maryville shot 47.7% (31-65) from the field, but only 27.8% (5-18) from three. Maryville's defense forced 13 turnovers during the game.
Monday night saw the Saints face the McKendree Bearcats, another game in which Maryville fell in a close encounter, 59-63. The two teams were even at 45 in the fourth quarter, but an 11-2 McKendree run led the Bearcats to victory. Carsyn Fearday led the way for the Saints with another 16 points. Haidyn Pitsch and Antoinette Mussorici had 15 and 10 points for 41 of the team's 59 points. The Saints shot 36.4% (24-66) from the field, which included a dreadful 15.8% (3-19) from three.
Missouri S&T (1-5, 0-2)
The Miners also saw the start to their GLVC season begin with two losses.
On Saturday against UMSL, Missouri S&T saw their first-half lead wiped away by a hot-shooting Triton second-half. The Miners held a 15-point lead at one point, but the Tritons went 21-of-31 – 67.7 percent – after the intermission to sink S&T in their first GLVC game of the year, 57-66. Katelynne Roberts led the Miners with 21 points along with 11 rebounds. The only other Miner to finish in double-digits scoring was Chorus Davis with 11 points. S&T shot 42.6% (23-54) from the field, but only 10% (1-10) from three.
Monday night against Indianapolis was another instance where the Miners could not hold on to a first half lead. A third quarter run by the Greyhounds pushed S&T to another loss on the year, 61-72. The Greyhounds took the lead in the third quarter, which they would not give up the rest of the game. S&T was led by Eryn Puett with 20 points, who was followed closely by Katelynne Roberts with 18. The Miners shot 36.2% (21-58) from the field, which included 30.4% (7-23) from three. The Miner defense also forced 16 turnovers during the game.
