10/26/2023 9:00:00 AM

The University of Illinois Springfield women's soccer team heads into the last weekend of conference play with two important road matches that will have conference tournament implications. The Prairie Stars face Lewis on Friday night at 5:00 p.m., and Indianapolis on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.

UIS (6-5-4, 6-4-1)

UIS is currently 6th in the GLVC table after two losses last weekend.

Friday night against UMSL was an extremely even matchup between two teams that have already qualified for the GLVC Tournament. The lone goal of the game came from Kayley Judy as she picked up a loose ball and rifled it into the bottom right corner from 25 yards out. UIS had chances of their own but the Triton defense stood strong as UMSL walked away with a 1-0 win. UIS edged UMSL in shots 11-10, but the Tritons had more on target, 8-4.

Sunday was a substantial loss as the McKendree Bearcats scored five goals. Anna Stiffler scored the first two as she netted her tenth and eleventh goals of the year. Katie Spotanski scored just two minutes after half-time to make it 3-0. The final two goals of the game were scored less than two minutes after one another, with the first coming in the 73rd minute. McKendree outshot UIS 17-8, with a 10-2 advantage in shots on goal.

Lewis (8-4-4, 7-1-3)

Lewis comes into the weekend 4th in the GLVC, while on a three game win streak.

On Friday night the Flyers traveled to Kirksville for a match with Truman State. The Bulldogs found themselves ahead just 15 minutes into the match. Lewis would equalize less than ten minutes later as Elisa Aguilar scored her 5th goal of the season. The Flyers would take the lead in the second-half as Breanna Culver scored her 3rd of the season. Lewis wouldn't look back from there as they held on for a 2-1 win. Lewis outshot TSU 16-7, with an 8-4 advantage in shots on target.

On Sunday the Flyers faced off against the Upper Iowa Peacocks. Even though UIU is near the bottom of the table, this match was very close throughout. The first goal of the match came in the 66th minute as Melisa Hadzic scored her 6th goal of the year. The Flyers scored again just a minute later as Breanna Culver scored her second goal of the weekend. Both teams fired off 15 shots in the match, as Lewis just slightly edged UIU in shots on target, 8-7.

The top three goal scorers from Lewis all netted last weekend; Melisa Hadzic with six, Elisa Aguilar with five, and Breanna Culver with four. Only four other Flyers have scored at least one goal the whole year. Breanna Culver has also registered five assists.

UIS vs. Lewis History

UIS holds a 3-9-3 record against Lewis all-time. Last year, the schools met in both the regular season and postseason, with both winning once. In the GLVC Tournament, the Prairie Stars advanced with a 1-0 win courtesy of a Sierra Cenek goal. Lewis won the regular season fixture 1-0, with both matches being played in Romeoville.

Indianapolis (4-7-4, 3-5-3)

Indianapolis currently sits in 9th in the GLVC with just eight conference tournament spots available.

On Friday night against Upper Iowa, the Greyhounds picked up a huge three points on their quest to make the GLVC Tournament. A goal in either half led the Hounds to a 2-0 win in Iowa. Stephanie Brady scored the first in the 40th minute, her third goal of the year. Mia Winters scored the second in the 61st minute, her first collegiate goal. Indy outshot UIU 18-9, with a 10-4 advantage in shots on target.

Sunday afternoon the Hounds played to a 0-0 draw with Truman State. Indy outshot TSU 8-6, holding a slight edge in shots on target as well, 3-2.

UIndy's top threats are Sarah Wegener and Stephanie Brady, who both have three goals on the season. There are six other Greyhounds that have each scored one goal on the year. Wegener also has the most assists on the team with three.

UIndy hosts Quincy on Friday night before welcoming UIS on Sunday.

UIS vs UIndy History
