Baseball Wins Indianapolis Series With Extra-Inning Victory

The University of Illinois Springfield baseball program earned a series win over Indianapolis on Sunday, and is now one win away from another GLVC Division title. The Prairie Stars defeated the Greyhounds by an 11-10 score in a back-and-forth extra-inning game.

UIS looked strong early, building a 6-2 lead through five innings. Clarke Davenport played a big role in the early lead, allowing no runs in his first 3 1/3 innings of relief.

In the sixth inning, Indianapolis took advantage of three walks and one hit by pitch to score four runs despite having just two hits in the inning. Indianapolis then took a 10-8 lead in the seventh after two straight Prairie Stars errors led to another four-run inning.

UIS fought back and tied the game in the top of the eighth. The team's bullpen then stepped up. Brendan Anderson did not allow a run in the eighth, and Luke Fitton set Indianapolis down 1-2-3 in the ninth to force extra innings.

In the tenth, Noah Crowe had a pinch-hit double to get a rally started for the Prairie Stars. Nick Mayerhofer then singled him home to put UIS up 11-10. Fitton worked his second inning and allowed just a two-out walk, as he closed the victory out for the Prairie Stars.

Asher Bradd was one of the offensive leaders with four hits and two RBI. Austin Alderman had two hits, including a homer, and finished with three runs and three RBI. Hunter Phelps and Mayerhofer each drove in two, and Brant Vanaman scored twice.

UIS improves to 36-7 on the season, and 16-4 in conference action. The Prairie Stars end the season next week at home with a four-game series against Truman State.
