Track and Field Wins Four Championships At 2021 GLVC Outdoor Meet

The University of Illinois Springfield track and field program had its best GLVC Outdoor Track and Field Championships this week in Rolla, Mo. UIS won four GLVC Individual Championships, and both teams set a program-record for most points at the meet.
 
The men's program won three individual championship. Blake Jones won both the 1,500m and 5,000m, and Cortland Ross captured the 10,000m. The Prairie Stars finished with 43 overall points, and came in eighth-place.
 
On the women's side, Taryn Christy won her second straight 10,000m outdoor title. The women's team finished with 19 overall points, and were 11th in the team standings.
 
Day Three Results
Blake Jones was the highlight of day three by winning both the 1,500m and 5,000m races. In the 1,500m finals, he ran a time of 3:48.83, which won the event by nearly two seconds. That record was a NCAA provisional mark for Jones. In the 5,000m, Jones ran a time of 14:45.15 for the win. He was tied with one lap remaining, but his final split of 1:03.16 captured the victory for him.
 
Also in the 5,000m, Wyatt McIntyre finished third and Cort Ross was fourth. On the women's side, Gloria Esarco scored the team's final points with a fifth-place showing in the 1,500m.

Day Two Results
Gloria Esarco made program history by becoming the first women to score in the 3,000m steeplechase. She was in the lead pack at the end of the race and finished fourth overall with a time of 11:05. Jade Anderson just missed scoring by coming in ninth in the race.

In other events, Ryan Jones finished 10th in the men's 3,000m steeplechase, and Breanna Chandler was the top UIS finisher in the 800m with a 16th-place showing.

Day One Results
UIS swept the men's and women's 10,000m events at the GLVC Outdoor Track and Field Championships for the second straight time. Cort Ross won the men's race, and Taryn Christy was first on the women's side.
 
Ross captured a GLVC Championship in his first collegiate season. He led for much of the 10,000m race, but had just a 0.15 second lead with one lap to go. He ran a final split time of 1:04.38 though to pull away for nearly a five-second victory. His final mark of 30:10.94 was a NCAA provisional time and a new record for the GLVC Championships.
 
Christy won back-to-back outdoor conference titles in the 10,000m after also winning in 2019. She dominated the race throughout and set UIS and GLVC records with a time of 34:48.34. She won the race by over one minute and 33 seconds, and improved her NCAA provisional mark in the event.
 
In other results on Thursday in Rolla, Mo., Blake Jones advanced to the finals of the 1,500m run after finishing second in prelims. Gloria Esarco will also be competing in the 1,500m finals after coming in fifth in the women's prelim. In the men's 10,000m, Tyler Pasley scored with a seventh-place finish.
