The University of Illinois Springfield baseball team earned a series win over Rockhurst after sweeping a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at the UIS Baseball Field. The Prairie Stars won a dramatic game one by an 8-7 margin, and then defeated the Hawks 14-0 in the second game.
Â
UIS led the first game by a 6-2 score going into the seventh inning in a seven-inning game. Rockhurst scored four runs though to force extra innings. In the eighth, Rockhurst had its first three runners reach, and it took a one-run lead. A popout and double play though kept the damage for UIS at just that one run. In the bottom half of that inning, Rockhurst retired the first two batters, but
Austin Alderman hit a solo homer to move the game into the ninth.
Â
Another double play by UIS, this one on an outfield assist from Alderman, kept the Hawks from scoring in the ninth. A two-base error to open the bottom of the ninth put
Anthony Deconcilis on second. A sacrifice bunt by
Bobby Barnard advanced him to third, and
Asher Bradd then hit a walk-off sacrifice fly to right field.
Â
Chad Saner threw six innings in his start and allowed just three hits and two runs. He struck out six in the game.
Luke Fitton earned the win after pitching the final two innings and not allowing a run.
Kal Youngquist led the offense with two hits, two runs, and two RBI. Alderman also drove in two, and
Brandon Bannon scored twice.
Â
In game two on Sunday, UIS scored nine times in the first two innings to break the game open right away.
Blake Begner earned the win after throwing five innings and allowing just two hits. Bannon, Alderman, and Barnard all left the park with a homer in the game. Bannon and Barnard each had three RBI, and
Nick Mayerhofer had a team-high three runs.
Kal Youngquist added three hits, two runs, and two RBI.
Â
UIS won three out the four games against Rockhurst, and has now won all five GLVC series it has played. The Prairie Stars are 21-3 on the season and 17-3 in GLVC play. UIS will hit the road for the next eight games, starting with a series next week at Drury.
