The University of Illinois Springfield men's soccer team played a game with late drama on Sunday in Romeoville, Ill. The Prairie Stars were able to come out with a 2-1 overtime win against Lewis.
Â
The first half of the game was tightly contested with Lewis recording four shots to UIS's two. The second half of the game saw more offensive chances for both teams with both increasing their attacking intensity in order to find the opening goal.
Â
It was UIS that broke the deadlock when a freekick was awarded to the Prairie Stars a few yards away from the edge of the Flyers penalty area in the 80th minute.
Javier Milla stepped up to take the free kick and curled his shot over the wall and past the keeper to give the Prairie Stars the lead.
Â
Lewis responded quickly with a goal from a penalty kick in the 82nd minute, but UIS was able to hang on and get the game into overtime.
Â
UIS was able to push forward again in the first overtime period and get the decisive goal in the 94th minute from
Quentin Reese. UIS was able to create a nice combination of passes down the left-side field when
Marvin Zott was able to cross a ball to the back post. That cross was chested down by
Mario Gonzalez into the path of Reese who blasted a shot from in close past the Lewis keeper.
Â
Lewis held an overall advantage on shots and corners, but the Prairie Stars were able to match the Flyers in shots on goal tally at three apiece.
Pijus Petkevicius made two saves during the contest.
Â
With the victory, UIS now rises to 2-1-3 on the season. The Prairie Stars will once again take to the road against Quincy for their next GLVC contest.
