UIS Seniors Lead Women's Basketball To Victory On Senior Day

The University of Illinois Springfield women's basketball team celebrated Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at TRAC with an 85-80 victory over Maryville.
 
UIS won the game in the second and third quarters, outscoring the Saints by a 43-33 margin for those 20 minutes. Defensively in that span, the Prairie Stars held Maryville to just 27 percent shooting, including 2-of-13 from three-point range. UIS, meanwhile, was 15-of-26 from the field and five-of-eight from three-point range for those quarters.
 
UIS trailed by seven early in the second quarter, but took a 34-32 lead by halftime. An 11-0 run early in the second half gave the Prairie Stars the lead for good, as Maryville could never get close than five until the final minutes.
 
Maryville did get within three at 72-69 with 1:23 left, and Myka Roth was fouled for UIS. She made the first free throw, and then got her own miss on the second straight. She was fouled again and connected on both shots, starting a string of eight straight made free throws which sealed the game for UIS.
 
UIS's seven seniors scored 68 of the team's 85 points in the contest, and also had 25 rebounds and 12 assists. The Prairie Stars shot 48.1 percent from the field, and had a season-best against NCAA II programs with 10 three-pointers. Defensively, it held Maryville to just 40.5 percent shooting from the field and 25 percent from three-point range.
 
Katelyn Rosner had a career-high 20 points, and also led the team with nine rebounds. She made seven-of-12 three-pointers, including all three three-pointers she attempted. Jasmine Sangster had 16 points, and Tehya Fortune collected 14. Sangster had a team-high five assists. Fortune also tied the school's career three-point record after making three in the game. Airiana Smith tied a career-high with 10 points, and Myka Roth scored eight points. The other two seniors, Lanie Hicks and Erin Bolskar also saw key minutes, including Hicks collecting two assists.
 
UIS improves to 9-15 overall and 4-12 in GLVC play. The Prairie Stars have their final home game of the year on Thursday versus Southern Indiana.
