Men's Basketball Outscored In Overtime In Loss At Quincy

The University of Illinois Springfield men's basketball team fell in overtime in Quincy, Ill. on Saturday afternoon. The Prairie Stars dropped a 94-88 decision to Quincy.
 
The two teams went into overtime tied at 78, and Quincy opened the extra period by scoring the first 11 points. The Hawks hit three-of-four to start overtime, including two three-pointers and a three-point play. UIS, meanwhile, missed their first five shots, and fell behind too much in order to mount a comeback.
 
Regulation play featured large runs by both teams. UIS started strong by jumping out to a 14-3 lead in the first five minutes, only to see Hawks take their first lead by the eight-minute mark. After trading the lead back and forth several times, the Prairie Stars went on an 11-0 run late in the half, punctuated by back-to-back dunks by Daniel Soetan. Quincy, though, hit a three-pointer in the final seconds to take some momentum into halftime despite UIS leading 42-33.
 
In the second half, UIS built its lead to 15 after Alonso Meana hit two straight three-pointers. Quincy chipped into that lead for the rest of the half, eventually tying the game at 71. UIS led 75-74 with 2:37 remaining, when Quincy scored four straight to lead 78-75 with 42 seconds left. Chase Robinson came down and hit a three-pointer on UIS's final possession of regulation to force the extra period.
 
The difference in the game was at the free-throw line. Quincy was sent to the charity stripe 39 times, and it converted 25 into points. UIS, meanwhile, shot just 16 free throws and made 11. Both teams made 11 three-pointers, but the Prairie Stars shot 27.5 percent from behind the arc, compared to 42.3 percent for Quincy.
 
Robinson led UIS with 28 points, including hitting six-of-10 from three-point range. He also had six rebounds, four assists, four steals, and two blocks. Keymonta Johnson finished with 18 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Daniel Soetan had 14 points and a team-best seven assists. Alonso Meana scored 13 points off the bench.
 
UIS falls to 9-6 on the season and 2-5 in GLVC play. The Prairie Stars start a five-game homestand on Monday night at TRAC against Lewis.
