The University of Illinois Springfield men's basketball team fell to Lewis on Monday night at TRAC by a 71-62 margin.
Â
UIS came out cold, shooting under 30 percent from the field and the three-point line for the first 20 minutes. The Prairie Stars still led 17-15 at one point, but Lewis went on a 27-8 run over the rest of the half for a 42-25 halftime lead.
Â
Over the first ten minutes of the second half, UIS got back into the game with its defense. Lewis shot just four-of-13 in the first 10 minutes of the half, and turned the ball over three times. Offensively, the Prairie Stars scored 26 points in that span, and UIS took a 51-50 lead on a three-pointer by
Matt Wendling.
Â
Lewis retook the lead quickly, and the two teams were tied at 56 with 7:49 left. A Lewis dunk and three-pointer on its next two possessions gave the Flyers the lead for good, as UIS went nearly five minutes without a field goal.
Â
Lewis forced 15 turnovers in the game, while UIS forced just seven. The Flyers finished with six more points off turnovers, and 14 more points in the paint. UIS held Lewis under 45 percent from the field and 30 percent from three-point range, but the Prairie Stars shot just 40 percent from the field and 31 percent from behind the arc.
Â
Keymonta Johnson led the Prairie Stars with a double-double of 18 points and 10 rebounds.
Daniel Soetan added 16 points and eight boards, and
Matt Wendling finished with 13 points. Johnson and
Chase Robinson both had three assists.
Â
UIS falls to 9-7 overall and 2-6 in GLVC play. The Prairie Stars host Missouri-St. Louis on Thursday evening at TRAC.
