UIS Baseball Wins Another GLVC Weekend Series on Saturday

The University of Illinois Springfield baseball team won its third straight GLVC weekend series on Saturday. The Prairie Stars split a doubleheader with Maryville, and won the three-game series with two wins on the weekend.

In game one, Maryville won by a 6-4 margin in a game that saw both teams manage just six hits. The Saints already led 3-2 when they scored three more in the seventh inning. UIS got two runs back in the eighth, and had the tying run at the plate in both of the final two innings, but couldn't get any more tallies.

Ruben Markham led the offense with two hits and two RBI. Zach Speaker also had two RBI. UIS pitchers combined for 18 strikeouts in the contest, including 11 by starter Justin Revels in six innings.

In game two, UIS trailed 3-2 in the fifth when it exploded for 10 runs. The Prairie Stars had eight hits in that inning, the biggest a grand slam by Zach Speaker. That was enough for the win, as the bullpen didn't allow a run in the final 3 1/3 innings.

Andrew Dean got the win to improve to 4-0 on the year. He allowed three earned runs and struck out nine batters in 5 2/3 innings. Brayden Jensen and Colton Thompson threw the final three innings and the duo didn't allow a hit.

Chris Monroe, Markham, Nick Wisz, and Brandon Bannon all had two hits. Markham crossed the plate three times, and Monroe, Chris Mathieu, and Bannon all had two runs. Nick Mayerhofer, Austin Alderman, and Wisz each finished with two RBI, and Speaker had four from his grand slam.

UIS is now 15-7-1 on the year, and 6-5 in GLVC play. The Prairie Stars will be in action again on Tuesday with a single game at Quincy.
