Baseball Scores Six Times In The Ninth For Win Over No. 6 Quincy

The University of Illinois Springfield baseball team defeated No. 6 Quincy on Tuesday afternoon in Quincy, Ill. The Prairie Stars scored six times in the ninth inning to win the back-and-forth game by a 13-8 margin.
 
UIS jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the contest after five inning of play, but the Hawks tied the game with a six-run sixth inning. Quincy took a 7-6 lead in the seventh inning, and both teams scored once in the eighth.
 
In the ninth, the Prairie Stars loaded the bases with one out on a hit by pitch, walk, and single. Brandon Bannon was up next and hit the ball to left field. The fielder misplayed it and two runners scored to put UIS ahead. John Sechen then hit a three-run homer, and Chris Monroe also went deep to give UIS a six-run inning. Nick Alvarado pitched a scoreless ninth to give UIS a win over the nationally-ranked Hawks.
 
Monroe led the offensive attack for UIS, including two home runs. Besides his solo shot in the ninth, he also hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning. Monroe also had two singles and a walk in six plate appearances, and finished with four RBI and two runs. Ruben Markham had three hits, including two doubles, and Nick Mayerhofer had three hits, with one triple. Brandon Bannon and Sechen each had a pair of hits to contribute to the 16 that the Prairie Stars had in the game. Sechen, Ben Schanding, Austin Alderman, and Bannon all scored twice in the game.
 
On the mound, Brayden Jensen got the Prairie Stars off to a good start by throwing the first four innings and allowing just two hits, one walk, and no runs. He struck out five and got five groundball outs. Joe Dittmar picked up the win after throwing the seventh and eighth innings, and allow just one run. The UIS pitching staff combined for 13 strikeouts in the game.
 
UIS improves to 16-7-1 on the season, and 7-5 in GLVC action. The Prairie Stars are home this weekend for a three-game series against Drury.
