UIS and Rockhurst Split First Two Games Of GLVC Baseball Series

The No. 4 University of Illinois Springfield baseball team split a GLVC doubleheader on Saturday in Kansas City, Mo. The Prairie Stars dropped game one to Rockhurst by a 7-6 score, but bounced back for a 14-5 win in the second contest.

In game one, UIS was two outs away from a victory, but the Hawks rallied with a three-run ninth for a walk-off win. Prior to that, it looked like Nick Mayerhofer would be the hero for the Prairie Stars. He tied the game in the seventh with a RBI double, and then scored the go-ahead run later in that inning. UIS added one more in the ninth for a 6-4 lead, but the Prairie Stars couldn't hang on.

Chris Monroe was three-for-three in the game with a solo homer and two RBI. Mayerhofer finished with two hits and two runs.

In the second game, every UIS starter recorded a hit, seven scored at least one run, and six had a RBI. The Prairie Stars led 6-3 after six innings before breaking open the contest with eight runs in the seventh and eighth innings.

Austin Alderman led the offensive attack with three hits, three RBI, and two runs. He had two doubles on the afternoon. Ruben Markham and Ryan Fish both had three RBI, and Ben Schanding drove in a pair of runners. Monroe scored three times, and John Sechen, Schanding, Zach Speaker, and Mayerhofer each had two runs.

Andrew Dean pitched seven innings and allowed eight hits and five runs, although just two runs were earned. He struck out nine batters. Trent Sidwell and Brendan Anderson each pitched a scoreless inning in relief.

UIS is now 12-4-1 on the season and 3-2 in GLVC play. The Prairie Stars and Rockhurst will conclude their three-game series with a 1 p.m. game on Sunday.
