Game Recap: Baseball |

Strong Pitching Helps Baseball Remain Unbeaten On The Season

The No. 4 University of Illinois Springfield baseball team received two great pitching performances from its starters on Friday afternoon at the UIS Baseball Field to help the team remain unbeaten on the season. UIS won game one over William Jewell by a 10-1 margin, and the two teams tied 2-2 in the second game after it was called after nine innings due to darkness.

In the opener, Justin Revels threw six innings and allowed just four hits and no earned runs. The offense gave him plenty of support with a three-run third inning and a five-run sixth frame. Nick Alvarado, Ryan Jemar, and Brendan Anderson each pitched a scoreless inning of relief to complete the game.

Chris Mathieu came off the bench early in the game and finished with three hits, two RBI and one run. Ruben Markham was three-for-three with two RBI and two runs. Brennan Brogni and John Sechen each scored twice, and Brogni each had two RBI.

The second game saw dominant pitching by both starters. UIS broke a scoreless tie in the first when Brogni hit a RBI double. One inning later, Zach Speaker hit a solo homer to put the Prairie Stars up 2-0.

Andrew Dean pitched seven innings of scoreless ball for UIS, allowing four hits and one walk. He struck out 10 batters in the game. UIS went to its bullpen in the eighth, and an error on the first batter led to an unearned run. In the ninth, the Prairie Stars were one out away from a victory, but a bloop hit found a hole that scored the tying run.

Markham led the team with two hits. Speaker reached base four times with his homer and three walks. Brandon Bannon had the team's first run of the game.

UIS is now 8-0-1 on the year. The Prairie Stars will be in action again on Tuesday with a single game at Missouri-St. Louis.
