The No. 3 University of Illinois Springfield baseball team had a big offensive day, especially by
Zach Speaker, on Sunday in Springfield, Ill. The Prairie Stars managed just a split though, losing game one to Truman State by an 11-10 score, and winning game two by a 20-1 margin.
Â
UIS had 35 hits to go along with its 31 runs on the day. Speaker had six of those hits, including one double and three homers, and he had four runs and 10 RBI.
Â
Speaker did most of his damage in game two when he hit three home runs. He had a two-run homer in the first, a three-run homer in the sixth, and another three-run homer in the seventh. Speaker also singled in another at-bat and scored for a total line of four-for-six batting with four runs and eight RBI.
Â
Brandon Bannon had three hits in the game and drove in six runners.
Chris Monroe had three hits, three RBI, and three runs.
Brock Immke improved to 3-0 on the season after allowing one run and three hits in five innings.
Â
The game two win was a big bounce back after an 11-10 loss in the first contest. UIS led 6-0 after an inning and a half and 9-5 after three innings. Truman tied the game by the sixth inning and took a one-run lead in the seventh. UIS, which was batting first in both games since the games were originally scheduled to be at Truman, got a game-tying homer by
Ben Schanding in the top of the ninth. The Bulldogs answered though with a walk-off win in the bottom of the inning, after a runner scored on a UIS error in the outfield.
Â
Nick Wisz had a team-high three hits in the first game, and
Austin Alderman had three RBI.
John Sechen, Alderman, and
Nick Mayerhofer all crossed the plate twice.
Â
UIS is now 9-1-1 on the season and 1-1 in GLVC play. The two teams end the three-game series on Monday at 1 p.m.
